Mid-Winter Christmas Party

Brighty Zhang from Yoobee School of Design came to talk to our senior international students last week. Brighty was accompanied by Roy Cheung who graduated from Darfield High School last year. Roy has been studying at Yoobee and showed us what he has been learning, including a short film which he was involved in making. Roy has worked very hard at Yoobee and will no doubt continue to be successful as he moves on to different modules.Last Friday, we held our annual Mid-Winter Christmas Party. The food was fantastic, (thanks to Mrs Anne Armstrong, with helpers Avis and Doug Hewson), the music was awesome and kept everyone dancing until the very end – thanks very much, Mr Singh! The range of music and the different dancing styles were really great to watch, and everyone had so much fun. We took the opportunity to farewell Sarah as she heads over to Alabama to stay with her former host family and attend the Alabama High School (where she was a Year 13 student) reunion. Santa Claus arrived looking very ‘Santa Claus’ with his new Santa sack! We really appreciated Santa coming out of ‘hibernation’ especially for our International Mid-Winter Christmas Party.

Well done Kento Dogin (our International Student Leader) for managing the Darfield High School Football Team. There are a number of international students in this team and we know they will give it everything they’ve got – as well as enjoying the game and having fun. Next week, we are welcoming an Education Delegation from Shandan in China. The delegation will be at school for a day visiting classes and meeting with our students from China, as well as the Darfield High School students who will be going to China later in the year. We’ll have photos in the next issue.

A very big welcome to:

They will spend two months at Darfield High School and we are looking forward to making sure they have a great experience while they are here. Monday was spent on orientation, having a look around the school and a trip around the local area.Etienne Rouzaut, Quentin Guellaen, Lena Klay, Cloe Lannnou, Manon Noulard and Jo Suret-Canale from Lycee Felix Le Dantec in Brittany, France. These students arrived at Darfield on Sunday, 26 May, after a very long flight and were met by Ms Juhel and Sarah Rawson, along with their host families.

By the end of the school day, six very tired, jetlagged students made their way home. On Tuesday, they received their school uniforms and Mr Morris formally welcomed them all to Darfield High School in assembly. Then it was into classes.

Welcome back to:

Ruka Ishikawa, Courtney Hughes, Erika Pander and Joshua Cook who arrived with the French students after spending two months at their school in France. They had a fantastic time, not only at Lycee Felix De Dantec, but also in Paris and other places they visited. Thanks to Ms Teryl Scott for accompanying our students to France and sharing the delights of Paris with them.

Amy Musson and Emma Brooks who also returned on Sunday, 26 May from their stay at Southpointe Academy in Tsawwassen, Vancouver.

We are very proud of these Darfield High School students for being such great ambassadors for our school in two very different parts of the world.Amy and Emma attended school and joined in with lots of activities at school as well as visiting places of interest, including Whistler. They will do a presentation in assembly next term which we are looking forward to.

Sarah, our Homestay Co-ordinator, had a very busy weekend show jumping and completing a cross country on Papillon. Sarah has a great interest in Equestrian and she has been encouraging our international students to participate in this, with three learning to ride at the moment.

Sarah was also involved helping with Stage Challenge on Monday, 20 May. It was a long day but a lot of fun and good on you Sarah for taking time out of your busy working life to be involved in this.

Canterbury Regional Schools Alliance

In 2012, Darfield High School International formalised an alliance with the International Departments of Oxford Area School, Mt Hutt College, Ashburton College and Kaiapoi High School – Canterbury Regional Schools’ Alliance. The purpose of this alliance is to share knowledge and resources, support each other and work towards providing the best possible programmes for international students. The Alliance is supported by Education New Zealand and Christchurch Educated, and all five schools are members of both these organisations.

Yubetsu Scholarship

Kerey Leach Yr 12This is my first year at Darfield High School, and my second time going to Japan. The last time was with another school for only three weeks whereas this is for 10 weeks, so I am grateful to Darfield High, Ms Hayakawa and also Yubetsu Council for giving me this opportunity. Thank you.

I am really excited about going to Yubetsu, Japan. I think that it will be such an awesome opportunity! I hope to come back having learnt and understood the language and culture more!

Thank you Darfield and Yubetsu for this cool opportunity!
