At Darfield High School, we have been hosting international students for more than twenty years. Each year, we host 25 to 35 international students from around the world, as well as up to seven short-term group programmes. In the International Department, we have a team of four staff who provide excellent care. They are:

Nicola has overall responsibility for the international department. Nicola has a background in English language teaching, and international education marketing. She speaks Japanese, and studied abroad in Japan for one year as a high school student. Nicola enjoys mountain biking and skiing in her free time.

Sarah is in charge of homestay, international student activities, and day to day pastoral care. She has a background in teaching and social work, and studied abroad in the USA as a high school student. Sarah loves horse riding and owns two horses.

Shona is in charge of administration and payments for the International Department. She has been working at Darfield High School for more than 15 years and has also hosted international students. In her spare time, Shona enjoys spending time with her family, gardening and travelling.

Sumi headshot for web Sumi Hayakawa-Buist – International Student Liaison and Japanese Language Teacher

Sumi helps with pastoral care matters and interpreting for our Japanese students. She has worked at Darfield High School for many years, and has helped to establish several strong relationships with schools in Japan. Sumi has a black belt in Taekwondo.
